Linsey Pollak is well known all around Australia as a musician, instrument maker, composer, musical director and community music facilitator. He has worked as a musical instrument maker for over 20 years and has designed a number of new wind instruments as well as specialising in woodwind instruments from Eastern Europe (having studied Macedonian bagpipes in Macedonia). He has specialised in designing and making marimbas and other tuned percussion. His ongoing obsession combines much of this: Making music more accessible to the Community through musical instrument making and playing workshops.

HUMARIMBA WORKSHOPS

In 1988 Linsey invented the “Humarimba” a marimba (or large xylophone) played by three people and suspended from the belts of two of the three players. Since then the humarimba has become a mainstay of Linsey’s work in Community Music, the highlight being a project in 1995 called “The Big Marimba” where 400 people built 320 metres of marimbas (with 2400 tuned marimba bars) that crossed the Brisbane River attached to the Victoria Bridge as part of the Brisbane Biennial Music Festival. The humarimba is still a vital part of Linsey’s Community Music work.

The workshops are “hands on”, usually for a maximum of 15 – 18 players, playing pieces composed by Linsey specifically for the humarimba as well as composing new pieces in the individual groups. There is a regular weekly marimba class in Kin Kin (Sunshine Coast, Qld)

MACEDONIAN GYPSY BRASS BAND WORKSHOPS

These workshops  are for experienced  players of brass instruments, saxophone, clarinet and percussion (for 12  players or more).

The Rom  people (Gypsies) living in Macedonia are famous for their fine musicianship and among the styles of music they play is a type of Brass Band music that is particularly used for Weddings, Christenings and other Street celebrations and parties. It is wild and exciting. While studying Macedonian bagpipes in Macedonia 28 years ago Linsey was lucky enough to stay with the hospitable Roma Destanovski family in Berovo and fell in love with this style of music. He has written and arranged 5 part scores in the style played by these great musicians.
